Sansum Diabetes Research Institute understands whether you are newly diagnosed or living with diabetes for a long time, it is an overwhelming burden. Our type 1 diabetes (T1D) programs were created to provide you and your family with a space where you can feel supported and understood.

Whether you are recently diagnosed, or have been living with T1D for 50 years, we want to connect with you.

Our goal is to provide social, emotional and practical support to anyone in the T1D community. We have a team of experts that work hard to provide practical and up to date information and programs for you and your family. ​

Sansum Diabetes Research Institute partners with JDRF to provide support to the type 1 diabetes population throughout the tri-counties including Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.

OneTalk also provides presentation style events where participants have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of T1D.

Pediatric OneTalk

Our Pediatric OneTalk is a support group focused on children and families impacted by type 1 diabetes. Participants have the opportunity to share their ideas, experiences and explore ways to enhance their health and lifestyle.

SDRI partners with Cottage Children’s Medical Clinic to provide pediatric support to the T1D population in Santa Barbara.

OneTalk also provides presentation style events where participants have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of T1D.

Pediatric Family Events

Locally we provide free Sansum Diabetes Research Institute events such as quarterly type 1 diabetes family networking events; research updates where the latest global developments in T1D research are presented; parent-to-parent mentor program; play dates and other family-oriented events to connect T1D families with one another in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.

Coffee & Conversations

Coffee & Conversations is a group geared towards parents, caregivers, and adults with type-1 diabetes. It is a more intimate setting for others to share their experience and learn from one another.

Our Coffee & Conversation groups take place in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and San Luis Obispo.

Our mentorship program is designed for you to connect with another individual or family in your area that is impacted by type 1 diabetes.

T1D College Program

SDRI partners with UCSB T1D students and faculty to facilitate an on-campus T1D Club. The UCSB T1D Club is an innovative peer-based program, and the goal is to connect and empower students to thrive on campus while living with T1D.

The UCSB T1D Club is also a registered chapter through the College Diabetes Network.

SDRI also works closely with the Cal Poly SLO T1D Club. In 2017 the Cal Poly SLO T1D Club also became a registered chapter of the College Diabetes Network.
